VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: PAMELA SHEARS

Nadine: What is your day job?

Pamela: I’m an admin assistant in the medical field.

N: How did you get involved with FIN? How long have you been a volunteer?

P: It was my first time last year—and I hadn’t even gone to the Festival before! I’d gone to a film festival in Melbourne a few years back, and it was amazing, so I decided that I’d volunteer with this one, just as a way to see what it was like.

N: What is your favourite FIN Atlantic International Film Festival memory?

P: I did the set-up for the lobster dinner. It was a beautiful location; it was crazy how they went from a hall to looking really good! But I liked all parts of it—the people, the theatre.

N: What part of the film festival would you recommend to a first-time festival goer?

P: Oh, the movies! Totally immerse yourself in the movies. It’s funny, because I have an aunt that lives here in Halifax, and she got a couple of free tickets. She said that next year she’ll probably buy a pass. It’s a lot—you’re busy trying to see all these movies—but it’s only a week, and it’s stuff that you’re never going to see again. There were some really neat movies.

N: Did you see anything at FIN that you really liked?

P: JUDY was really good. And PATIENT ZERO, a documentary about AIDS. And the one about the female singer [LINDA RONSTADT: THE SOUND OF MY VOICE]… It was really good. There were some really good ones!

N: What do you most look forward to for next year?

P: Probably the films, again. Maybe volunteering at the airport, too, because people said the airport was neat, with all the people coming in for the Festival.

N: What is your favourite film?

P: It’s embarrassing, but it’s SWEET HOME ALABAMA. I’ve just always liked it. I like tons of other movies, but that’s probably my go-to. It came out when I was a teenager, so I bought the DVD.

N: I think when we first watched a film, who we were with, that kind of thing, has a lot to do with why we like a certain film.

P: Because then you watch it later, and you think, how is this my favourite movie? [laughing] I have grown!

N: What’s your favourite movie snack?

P: I used to like the soft-serve ice cream, but I don’t think they even do that anymore. I’m not a popcorn person.
