Board of Directors

  • Sanjeev Pushkarna

    Board Chair

    Sanjeev is the Director of Business Development at Nova Scotia Power, where he champions provincial growth across several sectors including green hydrogen, critical minerals, and offshore wind. He bridges the gap between government, developers, and the utility to unlock the potential of NovaScotia’s emerging green economy. A leader in clean energy innovation, Sanjeev previously headed Smart Grid Nova Scotia, launching trailblazing Distributed Energy Resource (DER) initiatives including residential and commercial battery systems, community solar gardens and EV bidirectional charging. Beyond the grid, Sanjeev sits on the Executive Board of Electric Mobility Canada and chairs the Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF). A proud Nova Scotian of Indian descent, he holds a BSc from Acadia University and an MBA from Dalhousie University.

  • Christina Johnston

    Treasurer

    Christina Johnston has worked in public practice for 25 years. Prior to that time, she held various industry Director of Finance and Chief Financial Officer positions. Christina has also owned multiple businesses. Her practice encompasses assurance, tax and business advisory services. She serves clients ranging from small businesses and not-for-profit organizations to large, vertically integrated groups of companies. Throughout her career Christina has served on a variety of boards in the community, earned her BBA degree from Acadia University, and has held her CPA, CMA designation since 1996.

  • Matt Newell

    Board Member

    Matt is a partner in the Halifax office of Stewart McKelvey, where he practices commercial real estate law with a focus on acquisitions and dispositions, leasing, financing, development, and property-related agreements. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Matthew has a strong connection to the region and an interest in supporting organizations that contribute to its cultural, civic, and economic life. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Discovery Centre, where he supports the organization’s work in STEAM education and community engagement. Outside of his legal practice and board work, Matthew enjoys travel, food and wine, music, and spending time at his cottage in Queens County.

  • Dr. Anu Mishra

    Board Member

    Dr. Anu Mishra is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Dalhousie University. She has a joint appointment in Dalhousie Undergraduate Medical Education, as Assistant Dean of Skilled Clinician and Interprofessional Education. As a clinician- educator Dr. Mishra has been involved in numerous scholarly projects with a special interest in equity, diversity and inclusion. She was awarded the AFMC Young Educator Award in 2025 for her contributions to medical education and the King Charles III Medal in 2024 for her work with the vision impairment community in Nova Scotia.

  • Heather Meldrum

    Board Member

    Heather Meldrum is a Director with Scotiabank’s Global Banking and Markets division in Halifax, NS, where she works in Corporate and Investment Banking supporting Atlantic Canadian clients. Since joining Scotiabank in 2011, she has held progressively senior roles in Corporate Banking in both Toronto and Halifax, with experience across various sectors including power & utilities, industrial & consumer products, provincial governments, and Crown corporations. Through her work with leading organizations across Atlantic Canada, Heather Meldrum brings a strong financial, strategic, and relationship-focused perspective to the AIFF Board of Directors.

  • Tim Margolian

    Board Member

    Tim brings five decades of commercial real estate expertise and community leadership to his role as a Board Member of AIFF. He began his career in 1976 when he founded his own commercial real estate firm, building a reputation as one of Nova Scotia’s most versatile advisors across industrial, office, retail leasing, and investment sales. Today, he serves as VP of Investment Sales and Leasing at Royal LePage Atlantic, where he continues to guide clients through complex transactions with insight and integrity.

    Beyond his professional work, Tim has been deeply engaged in community service. He is Past President and Life Director of Neptune Theatre, Life Director of the Blue Nose Marathon, and has served as Treasurer of the Shaar Shalom Congregation and the Atlantic Jewish Council. His board experience also includes NSCAD University, Ballet Jörgen Canada’s Regional Advisory Board, Northwood Group Incorporated, and multiple committees with the Nova Scotia Real Estate Commission.

    A lifelong learner and active spirit, Tim has been a squash player, marathon runner, slalom water skier, road cyclist, Ygoer, avid duplicate bridge player, and enthusiastic world traveler. His commitment to community, culture, and continuous growth shapes the perspective he brings to AIFF.

JOIN THE BOARD

Are you passionate about cinema in Atlantic Canada and want to be part of shaping the future of the Atlantic International Film Festival? AIFF’s board of directors is composed of five to twelve members of the Nova Scotia business and creative community who volunteer their time and expertise to provide high-level guidance and support to the festival’s core staff. 

BOARD COMMITMENT

Board members serve a one-year term with the opportunity to be reelected at the AGM. The board meets approximately eight times a year and members take part in active committees to support the staff in areas of HR, finance, development, governance and strategic planning. In addition to meetings, board members are expected to be available during the festival in September to represent the board at screenings, events and to connect with the community.  

Criteria AIFF considers for potential board members may include:

  • One - two years of board experience

  • HR expertise

  • Legal expertise

  • Marketing and communications expertise

  • Fundraising and development expertise

  • Equity, diversity, and inclusion training and commitment
