FREEDOM SWELL free online screening presented by AIFF and the NS Human Rights Commission
On the heels of the successful screening partnership of DAWN, HER DAD AND THE TRACKER during Human Rights Week, AIFF is partnering again with the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission to recognize the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in March. FREEDOM SWELL, an official documentary selection of the 2021 Atlantic International Film Festival, will screen virtually for free in Nova Scotia from March 15 - March 24, 2024. There will also be a special panel discussion with the filmmakers, available over zoom, on March 20 at 7PM. More information and access to the film can be found here.
FREEDOM SWELL is a feature length documentary that highlights a surf program designed to empower African Nova Scotian youth to connect with the ocean. The film explores the lack of diversity in the east coast surf scene, stemming from complex, historical barriers such as racism, segregated beaches, and generational fear of water. Co-founder, LaMeia Reddick, volunteers, participants, and community members, share their stories about the healing nature of water. FREEDOM SWELL beautifully represents the spirit of North Preston Surf, a flagship program designed to inspire for years to come.
