Marketing & Communications Manager

The Atlantic International Film Festival is currently accepting applications for the position of MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER.

Employment: Full-time, permanent 
Remuneration: Commensurate with experience (see below for a salary range)

Location: AIFF Office, 1888 Brunswick Street, Halifax, NS. This position is not suitable for remote work.

Overview:

The Marketing & Communications Manager (MCM) oversees day-to-day marketing, communications, and media relations for the Atlantic Film Festival Association and its events, including the Atlantic International Film Festival, AIFF Partners, AIFF Kids, AIFF Outdoor, and other industry/community events.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the MCM ensures consistent brand representation and leads the development and execution of the organization’s communications strategy and media relationships. This role manages marketing and media efforts for all events, balancing effectiveness with budget constraints.

  • Marketing & Communications Coordinator (contract)

  • Marketing & Communications Assistant/Support (if available),

  • Digital / Post Production (contract)

  • PR & Media Relations Representative (contract)

  • Creative services and brand partner (contract)

  • Photographer/Videographer (contract)

  • Volunteer Communications Team        

Key Responsibilities:

Operational

  • Coordinate all AIFF marketing, advertising, communications, media relations, and promotional activities.

  • Develop and maintain the AIFF brand and sub-brands (AIFF Partners, AIFF Kids, AIFF Outdoor).

  • Set and uphold communication standards to align with marketing strategies and AIFF's goals.

  • Lead the creation of annual marketing and public relations plans to promote AIFF locally and globally.

  • Oversee creative campaigns and advertising (including digital, social media, TV, print) for main events.

  • Ensure all departmental deliverables (design, communication, marketing) are met on schedule.

  • Supervise the development of marketing materials (brochures, guides, posters, etc.).

  • Manage AIFF's digital presence, including website, social media, and online sales.

  • Conduct market research to support audience development and sales strategies.

  • Analyze, review and report on marketing effectiveness and adjust strategies accordingly

Financial

  • Develop and manage the marketing & communications budget with the Executive Director and Management Team.

  • Provide accurate financial reports to the Executive Director, Management Team, and Board of Directors.

HR

  • Assist in hiring, training, and developing a strong marketing & communications team.

  • Foster a positive work environment and manage team performance through feedback.

  • Ensure compliance with AFFA HR policies and performance standards.

Report to and/or attend Board of Directors meetings as requested by the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of marketing and communications management experience, preferably in the arts or non-profit sector.

  • Strong writing skills with an emphasis on clarity, brevity, and tone.

  • Ability to analyze data and identify trends in marketing.

  • Passion for independent cinema and a commitment to promoting AIFF’s mission and values.

  • Proven track record of creative design and marketing work.

  • Experience managing and mentoring contract staff.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with sensitivity to diverse stakeholders.

  • Strong organizational skills with systems for tracking communications.

  • Collaborative team player who thrives under pressure.

  • Commitment to professional and ethical standards, including inclusive and anti-racist practices in the arts.

  • Proficient in Excel, Word, Adobe Suite, SquareSpace, Mailchimp, social media platforms, and Google Drive.

ABOUT AIFF: The Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF) is an eight-day festival featuring screenings of 100+ films; Q&As; receptions, industry events and gatherings. The festival celebrates new and established filmmaking voices from Atlantic Canada and around the world, helping audiences discover new artists, uncover new perspectives and better understand the world through the medium of cinema. The festival presents films that cover a broad range of topics and genres, and is dedicated to presenting and elevating work from creators who are female-identified, BIPOC, 2SLGBTQ+ and Deaf and Disabled. The 45th AIFF will take place September 10 - 17, 2025, at Cineplex Cinemas Park Lane in downtown Halifax.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: In addition to the festival in September, AIFF presents programs throughout the year designed to engage audiences, celebrate filmmakers and promote cinema. Other current programs include: AIFF Partners, the AIFF Filmmaker Lab, AIFF Kids, CBC’s Reel East Coast and AIFF Outdoor.

Compensation: The salary range is $55k - $60k per annum. In addition to salary, the festival offers health-benefits, paid vacation, cell phone allowance and professional development opportunities.
