Logline:
Based on a true story. England, 1982: When an ambitious Irish Quantity Surveyor is drawn to investigate fatal accidents on building sites, she uncovers a conspiracy that puts her life in danger.
Synopsis:
Manchester 1982; the death of a construction worker on a construction site is covered up by the foreman and a shadowy figure known as Major Miller.
One month later: Siobhán, a recently qualified Quantity Surveyor (QS), comes to Manchester to work with Riley’s Construction. She meets Séamus, an older Irish worker. Séamus is the only witness to the earlier cover up, but before he can reveal the truth he is killed in an accident. Séamus’ death prompts Siobhan to investigate what is going on at Riley’s.
Siobhán and her husband Darach have moved in with an old friend Pól & his wife Moira. Through Pól, Siobhán gets to know a union official, Tom Power. As Darach and Siobhan drift apart - Siobhan gets closer to Tom. As her investigation of Riley’s becomes more risky, Tom becomes an important confidant and lover. Unbeknownst to Siobhan, Tom is in fact an undercover Special Branch Police Officer sent to infiltrate the Union.
After leading a strike on a Riley's site, Pól is beaten up and put in a coma. Siobhan investigates his attack and learns about an organisation called the Economic League - a cartel that maintains control over the workers is covering up accidents, and silencing trouble-makers.
Siobhán steals evidence from the Riley’s files and uses it to track down an ex-employee who points a finger at the shady Maj Miller. Siobhán shares her discoveries with Tom Power, who is feeding the information back to his superiors in the police, who in turn are informing the economic league - putting Siobhan in danger.
Everything comes apart when a “burglar” breaks into Siobhán's home and steals the evidence she has amassed. Siobhán defies expectations and stands her ground, encouraged by Tom, who tells her that the only option is to do something drastic and break the law to expose the conspiracy. Siobhán is onto Tom, and knows it's a trap.
A game of cat and mouse ensues: Siobhán using Tom for the information she needs, while feeding him a decoy plan to keep the police at bay. Siobhán breaks into the Economic League offices and finds cabinets full of blacklist files on workers. When Tom realises he has been tricked he rushes to EL offices, only for Darach to step up - sacrificing himself so Siobhán can escape. Siobhán
