Volunteer Spotlight: Vivian

The Atlantic International Film Festival relies on the time, talent and energy of our volunteers. These motivated individuals come from diverse backgrounds, but come together with a shared passion for the community.

Our partnership with the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS) provides us with a key opportunity to engage with newcomers to the community, welcoming them to Halifax and offering them volunteer experiences where they can make connections and gain new skills. Thanks to ISANS, we are connected with amazing volunteers like Vivian.

Nadine: How did you get involved with the festival? How long have you been a volunteer?

Vivian: I got involved with the festival through the Immigration Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS), an immigrant settlement service agency in Atlantic Canada helping newcomers settle in the province. I have been volunteering since 2019.

N: What is your favourite Atlantic International Film Festival memory?
V: Learning how to work efficiently within a team of different people and personalities in short periods. It’s very exciting.

N: What part of the film festival would you recommend to a first-time festival goer?
V: The Opening Night Gala. It gives one an opportunity to get a glimpse of the high-profile films, usually with movie stars, that are getting the full red carpet glitzy treatment. From there, they can make choices of the films they want to go see.

N: What do you most look forward to every year at the festival?
V: Networking, helping people, making new friends and learning something new from the experience. Each year is always different.

N: What is your favourite film?
V: THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE WATER. I resonated with this film because it showed some discriminatory conditions in few black communities which I did not know existed in the present age.

6)      N: What is your favourite movie snack?
V: Popcorn with pop.

Vivian was interviewed by Nadine d'Entremont, AIFF Volunteer and External Relations Manager.
