Atlantic International Film Festival adds ‘In Conversation with Matthew Rankin’ to 2024 festival program

Special guests Sook-Yin Lee, Melanie Oates, Michael Downie, Jason Buxton, Andrea Dorfman, Tara Thorne, Reza Dahya and more to be part of AIFF 2024

The Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF), happening in Halifax, September 11-18, welcomes Matthew Rankin, director of UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE, to the 2024 festival for a special ticketed 'In Conversation With Matthew Rankin' event open to the public on September 14th, 2024 at 1:oo PM AST at Cineplex Cinemas Park Lane.

Rankin will be joined by local CBC journalist Nicola Seguin to discuss his work as one of Canada’s most prolific filmmakers. They will chat about his previous film successes, THE TWENTIETH CENTURY and UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE, chosen as Canada’s official entry for Best International Feature Film for the upcoming 97th Academy Awards, along with him receiving the inaugural Directors’ Fortnight Audience Award at Cannes and the Bright Horizons Award at the Melbourne International Film Festival. 

Tickets for this event as well as UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE, which screens twice at AIFF 2024, are on sale now.

AIFF is also welcoming artist and filmmaker Sook-Yin Lee, who will be speaking with Laura Simpson (co-founder and CEO of Side Door), about her role as director of PAYING FOR IT. This discussion, as part of “AIFF Partners Presents”, will take place at the Imperial Ballroom at the Lord Nelson Hotel on Friday, September 13, 1:30 PM. PAYING FOR IT will screen twice as part of the AIFF film program. 

In addition, comedian and writer Meredith MacNeill (Baroness Von Sketch) will be joining Jonathan Torrens for an intimate producer discussion at the Imperial Ballroom, Lord Nelson Hotel on Friday, September 13, 2:30 p.m. and Edmonton producer, Edmon Rotea will discuss the gory details of working in the genre space as the producer of SKINAMARINK (2022) for the ‘Representation In Genre…’ at Cineplex Cinema Park Lane - Theatre 2 on Saturday, September 14, 11:00 AM.

Tickets for screenings and special events along with festival passes are on sale now at: atlanticfilmfestival.ca. The festival’s physical box office will be open in the upper lobby of Cineplex Cinemas Park Lane from September 9-10, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and September 11-18 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
