Introducing Our 2023 Volunteer Coordinator!

Although presented over a tight 8 days, preparations to ensure a smooth Atlantic International Film Festival start months in advance of the opening credits. The heartbeat of our yearly celebration of cinema is the dedicated industry staff, volunteers, and partners of AIFF.

We’d like to introduce this year’s Volunteer Coordinator who has been working to provide our audiences with the finest AIFF experience yet: Ruth Rementeria. Read the interview below to get to know Ruth, what drew her to film industry, what makes volunteering so important as well as her go-to selection of movie snacks.

Nadine: Tell us a little about yourself.

Ruth: Hi! I’m Ruth, and I will be the volunteer coordinator this year. I am from Mexico City and I migrated here in 2019. I love and I am blessed to be able to live in this beautiful country. I have always been drawn to and passionate about the music and film industry, always felt that I will be a big part of it, and I am so eager to be working towards this!

N: Why do you think that volunteering is important?

R: When you volunteer for something that comes from the heart, you are able to understand your surroundings in a deeper way, people's necessities, point of views, and act in a compassionate way, and when you add passion, willingness and dedication the atmosphere of collaboration flows harmoniously. I am sure I will be getting to know people who are as dedicated and passionate as I am, and provide help to the Atlantic International Film Festival by making this amazing experience possible.

N: What are you most excited about in your new position?

R: I am so excited to be able to make more connections, whether it is in a professional or personal way to be able to learn, share knowledge and experience along with the volunteers in the process to set up and make the Atlantic International Film Festival possible.

N: What is your favourite movie, and why?

R: I think, I do not have a favourite movie: there are a lot of movies out there that I love watching because they share different messages, whether there are family oriented, sensitive topics raising awareness within this generation that I think is important to help see the world in a different way, even on a spiritual level. I love to reflect on the message. A good example of a movie I loved is WOMEN TALKING, deep conversations and a terrible reality that I believe we can change.

N: What is your favourite movie snack?

R: Well as I mentioned before, I am from Mexico, and my snacks or the way I prepare regular snacks are so different from what the Canadian fellows are used to. For example: I love Doritos or regular chips with lime and Valentina hot sauce… or I like other Mexican spicy suckers or candies.

The Atlantic International Film Festival is a not-for-profit cultural organization that offers a broad range of cinematic initiatives throughout the year, with a focus on the film industry in the Atlantic region. We thrive because of our strong ties to the arts community and our dedicated body of volunteers. Visit www.finfestival.ca/volunteer to learn more.
