THE LAST DAYS OF APRIL
Halifax advocate and adaptive athlete April Hubbard navigates the end of her life through the use of MAiD while documenting her journey and advocating for a more inclusive and compassionate world. Directed by Ree Wright and Meaghan Wright, this intimate documentary explores disability, chronic pain and systemic barriers while keeping its focus firmly on dignity, bodily autonomy, friendship and community.
SHEITEL: BEAUTY IN THE HIDDEN
Nova Scotian filmmaker Lynda Medjuck Suissa explores the cultural, religious and personal significance of hair covering among women in Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish communities. Through intimate interviews spanning Halifax to Jerusalem, the documentary looks beyond common misconceptions to explore the history, traditions, contemporary practices and personal stories behind hair covering.
SMASH & GRAB: THE REBEL LENS OF MIKE JONES
Travel back to 1970s Newfoundland through the remarkable archive of filmmaker Mike Jones, brother of Andy and Cathy Jones and a creative force behind the emergence of CODCO. Combining rare and previously unseen footage with stories from Mike’s family and collaborators, Justin Simms’ NFB documentary traces an influential chapter of Newfoundland comedy and filmmaking, from early stage shows and The Adventure of Faustus Bidgood to CODCO’s impact on Canadian television.
STITCHES
Halifax filmmaker Taylor Olson takes a chilling turn into psychological body horror with an anthology about three isolated men who submit to increasingly disturbing rituals of healing. From an AI cleanse to a livestream of penance and an experimental drug trial, their pain becomes performance in a world obsessed with watching. Made with an all Atlantic cast and crew, Stitches examines trauma, shame and our appetite for consuming other people’s suffering in the digital age.
TWO CUCKOLDS GO SWIMMING
Set in small town Cape Breton, Winston DeGiobbi’s bold sophomore feature follows a collection of lovers, friends and family members, centring on Molly, played by Deragh Campbell, as she returns to the community she left behind for a porn career in Toronto. Strange, intimate and uncompromising, the film explores sexuality, vulnerability, competition and violence through DeGiobbi’s distinctive vision of Cape Breton.
