Director Bio:

Vanessa King is a New Brunswick-based producer, story editor, screenwriting and director with nearly two decades of hands-on entertainment experience working with Oscar-winning talent. Her award-winning scripts have been recognized by industry giants like the AMPAS Nicholl Fellowship and Sony Worldwide Entertainment. She cofounded the free and educationally based New York City Screenwriters Co-Op and has been faculty as a screenwriting instructor at various public and graduate-level universities. She is a four-time appointee of The Diversity List and in 2019 was named an "industry thought leader" by Forbes Magazine for her work with Final Draft screenwriting software. She has coordinated and judged dozens of film festivals, consults for Harlem Film House and is a final round judge for UCLA's Master's Screenwriter Showcase. She is passionate about low-cost/no cost film education and is heavily involved in crew workforce development initiatives in New Brunswick. She is an Executive Board Member of Media NB, a member of WIFT-AT, a member of the NB Film Coop and is on the filmmaker advisory board of AIFF.

Synopsis:

The Slack is a contained atmospheric thriller built for low-budget execution that does not sacrifice cinematic storytelling. Set agains the rugged and haunting Fundy Shores of New Brunswick, this "Maritime Noir" follows Mae, a fisheries officer living with the lasting effects of a brain injury that has changed the way she experiences memory, perception and truth. As each season uncovers a new mystery rooted in the region's communities, Mae's investigations force her to navigate the stories people tell themselves to survive.
