Logline:
Deranged! explores the wild world of Canadian horror, following three filmmakers on the edge of disaster while tracing the six-decade history of a genre that thrives on innovation, risk, and cult devotion.
Synopsis:
Canadian horror has always been fearless, inventive and relentlessly ambitious. Deranged! The Story of Canadian Horror is a feature-length documentary that captures this singular filmmaking community in action. Following three horror directors at different stages of their careers, the film exposes the chaos, creativity and determination behind their latest projects, whether shot on shoestring budgets and teetering on the edge of disaster or venturing cautiously into the arena of big-money filmmaking.
Interwoven with these contemporary stories is a deep dive into more than 60 years of Canadian horror history, beginning with the nation’s first foray into outlier CanCon weirdness, 1961’s mind-melting The Mask, and moving on to such cult classics as Black Christmas (1974), Shivers (1975) and Pin (1988) that would soon help shape the genre worldwide. By tracing its legacy and concurrently spotlighting a bold new generation of filmmakers, Deranged! will reveal how Canadian horror continues to push boundaries, captivate audiences and catalyze a uniquely “outsider” vision of fear. A vision that consistently resonates with horror enthusiasts far beyond the borders of the Great White North.
